Fissure Sealants (Preventative Resin Restorations)
Fissures (deep grooves) on the molars (back teeth) that are difficult to clean can be prone to decay. Evidence suggests that 90% of dental cavities (holes) in children's teeth occur in pits and fissures when bacteria and food particles stick to them. Sealants are a protective plastic coating which are applied to the chewing surfaces and sides of permanent teeth that are at risk of decay. We believe that to be effective, the fissures and grooves should be thoroughly cleaned before they are sealed. An air abrasion technique is often used. The procedure is painless so no injections are required.
