Hygiene
Regular, effective plaque (a film of bacteria) removal is the best way to prevent the build-up of tartar. Tartar (calculus) is formed when calcium in the saliva combine with plaque to make it hard. Once tartar has formed, it can only be removed by your dentist or hygienist. Regular hygiene appointments help to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
Periodontal disease is inflammation of the tissues supporting the teeth. Gingivitis is an early stage of periodontal disease and is reversible. (A classic sign is when gums bleed during brushing). If not treated, gingivitis can develop into periodontitis. (Signs include red, swollen, bleeding gums, bad breath or taste, gum recession, teeth drifting apart, and loose teeth.)
